The 88 temples of Shikoku, known to have been visited by Saint Kobodaishi during his pilgrimage, have been visited since by pilgrims from all over Japan.
Sand and a principle image are brought in from each of the 88 temples and placed together in the Dojo hall.  Worshippers walk on the sand and pray to the images.
This ritual began as an alternative to the pilgrimage to Shikoku, so those who find it difficult to visit all 88 temples in person can still attain an equal level of achievement.
Begun in 1953, this ritual still receives many visitors today.
