| TEXT: | This is a festival held before starting agricultural work of the year, to pray for enough rain and bumper crops. Although the festival is called “Amagoi,” or “asking for rain” in English, it is actually conducted to pray for a good balance of sunny and rainy days. This traditional custom is performed in a modern way today, with a Shinto priest ringing bells and drums, and offering holy water from the well of the shrine by pails to the Gods. |
