TEXT:

A combined performance by five traditional Japanese theatres exclusive to Kyoto.  Hanamachi (Kyoto Geiko district) consists of five districts—Gion Koubu, Miyagawa-cho, Gion Higashi, Kami Shichiken and Ponto-cho.  With their signature dances, such as the Miyako Odori of Gion Koubu, the Kyo Odori of Miyagawa-cho and the Kitano Odori of Kami Shichiken, the five districts compete each spring in a show of stylishness and elegance. Developed and perfected through this annual competition, the skills of the geisha, known as hana, are superb.  Maiko no Furumai, a joint repertoire performed by 20 maiko (apprentice geisha) from all five districts, offers the only occasion when each individual dance style can be appreciated together.
