TEXT:   A traditional Japanese custom from the Heian Period (794-1192) is presented in this temple: the enjoyment of Azukigayu (rice porridge with small beans) at the New Year to expel evils and sickness. Visitors can enjoy not only this Azukigayu, but also Shojin Ryori, or Buddhist vegetarian meal. On the 8th, the “Azukigayu Sanhan-shiki Ceremony” is held (no admission charge), based on the dining manners of the Zen temple to nurture the sprit of alms for people. Let us enjoy Azukigayu and solemnly wish for a peaceful life in the new year.
