TEXT:   The Daina-no-gi Ceremony, or bean-throwing ceremony, is a reproduction of an old Tsuina-shiki Ceremony that was annually held in the Imperial Court during the Heian period (794-1192). At this festival, the Dance of the Demon is performed by the group of Sennojo Shigeyama, and the bean-throwing is done by the Persons of the Year (for 2006, those who are born in the zodiac year of the dog). After 4:00 p.m., Setsubun Hitakigushi, or skewers collected by the visitors and the citizens of Kyoto, are burned at sunset with a wish for the safety of family and sound health.
