This event is believed to have originated from a festival held for the greatest monks from all over Japan by Saint Kuya, the founder of Rokuharamitsuji Temple.  The anniversary service begins early in the morning of August 8, followed by a manto-e welcome lighting service held each evening at 20:00 from August 8 to10.  At 20:00 on August 16, another service is held to light the path and send the souls back to the spirit world.
