TEXT:   In ancient times, the Adashino area was a graveyard for commoners where the dead were left to decompose through exposure to the elements.  Adashino Nenbutsu Temple is said to have been built by Kobo Daishi so that people would have a temple to visit to pray for their ancestors.  On August 23 and 24 each year, people visit the temple and place lit candles on every one of the 8000 stone Buddha images and gravestones in order to bring peace to the souls of the deceased.
