| TEXT: | The cherry blossom festival as one of Kyoto's major events were started by the Emperor Hanayama in 985. Today, this festival is held at Hirano-jinja, a shrine famous for cherry blossom viewing and numerous varieties of cherry. Some 400 cherry trees of 50 varieties bloom in the shrine grounds. Especially, it is worth to see the shrine's 10 rare cherry trees; Sakigake, Taoyame, Nezame, Toranoo, Shogetsu, Kocho, Gyoiko, Imose, Arashiyama and Tsukubane cherry trees. |
