| TEXT: | Known as the “Cherry Temple,” Daigo-ji Temple is famous as a wonderful
cherry blossom viewing spot. Toyotomi Hideyosi had 700 cherry trees planted
there on March 15, 1598 for cherry blossom appreciation. He also had a
garden laid out at Sanboin where he held extravagant parties that attracted
over 1,000 guests, including his wives Kitano Mandokoro and Yodo. Today’s Hanami procession is reenacted the historical “Cherry blossom appreciation at Daigo-ji Temple.” Hundreds of participants are dressed as feudal lords in a parade between Sanboin’s Chinese Gate and the temple grounds with Momoyama-era tradition in atmosphere. |
