TEXT:   Alongside Aoi Festival and Gion Festival, Jidai Matsuri is one of the three big Kyoto festivals and held on Oct. 22.  This stunning parade featuring authentic costumes that represent historical eras of Kyoto from the Heian period to the end of the Edo period is unique. Geisha and maiko dress as Murasaki Shikibu, Seisho Nagon and other historical characters.  The two-kilometer-long procession of some 2,000 people leaves the Kyoto Imperial Palace at noon, turns west on Marutamachi-dori, goes to Oike-dori through Karasuma-dori, passes through Kawaramachi-dori and Sanjo-dori to Jingu-michi and arrives at Heian-jingu Shrine at approximately 14:30.
