| TEXT: | Founded in 794 when the capital was moved from Nara to Kyoto, Toji (Kyogokokuji) Temple stands to the east of the Rasho-mon Gate, the south gate of Kyoto. Kukai (Koubou Daishi) made Toji the central seminary of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, and the temple flourished. During the autumn special exhibition of Homotsu-kan, some of the temple’s 15,000 treasures, including national treasures and important cultural properties, are open to the public. This exhibition is held every autumn to display the treasures of esoteric Buddhist art. * Kanchi-in is also open to the public during this period. * Koubou market is held in the temple’s grounds on the 21st of every month. |
