TEXT:   Imayo (modern style), a popular song genre that flourished during the late Heian period, was cherished by Emperor Goshirakawa. An imayo awase (imayo competition) was held at night from the first to the 15th of September in the year 1174 at the Hojuji Palace. Imayo-uta-awase is held annually at Hojoji Temple, once the palace of Goshirakawa, to preserve the tradition of imayo. Each poet improvises to compose an imayo song according to themes given on that day. The poets are followed by musicians and dancers clad in Heian-era costumes improvising their performance.
