| TEXT: | A public viewing of Odoi Mound is held during the autumn leaves season. Odoi are the earthen ramparts built around the city of Kyoto by Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1595, when he defined the capital’s city limits. Remains can be found at nine locations in Kyoto, and they are designated a National Historical Site. The remains at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine are said to most resemble the original structure. To the west is Kamiya River, suggesting that the mound also served as a flood wall. The autumn leaves reflect beautifully on the surface of the river. |
