TEXT:   Satsuki (azalea) is a plant belonging to the Ericaceae family It is used widely in Japan in bonsai art. It is said that the name satsuki comes from the month of the same name (May in the lunar calendar) because the flowers bloom in unison around this time of the year. The uniqueness of satsuki lies in its variety; from the size of the flower to the shape and color of the petals, it is so rich in variety that it never becomes boring. During the annual Satsuki Exhibition held at the Kyoto Botanical Garden, you can enjoy 400 examples of satsuki of many varieties. Many of the plants will be on sale. The early summer season is further brightened by the white, pink, vermilion and blood-colored flowers.
