TEXT:   Kodai-ji Temple, founded by Kitano-Mandokoro Nene in dedication to her husband Hideyoshi Toyotomi, is illuminated at night during this time of the year.  The temple’s many important cultural items help create a magical atmosphere, while preserving the sublimity and tranquility that exists during the daytime.  The garden, designed by Enshu Kobori, has been laid out around two ponds, Garyu and Engetsu, located in the center of the grounds.  It has been designated as one of Japan’s historic sites and a place of scenic beauty.  The exquisite garden emerges from the darkness of night, displaying an astonishing beauty.  The reflection on the water creates a fantastic night view.  With the weeping cherry trees in front of the Hojo room illuminated during the season, cherry blossom night viewing is highly recommended.  From early winter to the height of spring, the illuminations at Kodai-ji temple are a beautiful addition to the night view of the temple.
