| TEXT: | Hokyo-ji Temple was once known as Todo no Gosho (“palace of hundreds”), where the daughters of the Imperial Family went into religion. The Imperial daughters were occasionally given dolls by their fathers, and the temple now has a number of dolls of historical importance, including the one most cherished by Emperor Komei. The temple is also known as Ningyo-dera (“the doll temple”) as it exhibits its collection of dolls and holds memorial services for old dolls before they are disposed of. Held in spring and autumn, the exhibition presents both old and new dolls from the Kyoto area and other regions, as well as spectacular dolls which is the size of people that are designed especially for each exhibit. This spring’s exhibit is entitled “Centennial Anniversary of Doll Exhibit: Tale of Genji and Hina Dolls.” On March 1, a variety of hina dolls are displayed in the temple’s Hondo hall and a dance is performed to the dolls by Shimabara Tayus, a group known for its flamboyant hair accessories. |
