TEXT:   Hojo-e is a ceremony in which captive fish and birds are released out of gratitude for the food that nature puts on our tables. During Gion Hojo-e, tea (Kosen-cha) is served and a Mt. Hiei kaiho-gyoja (Buddhist ascetic) offers prayers from 11:00. From 12:00, maiko and other participants release some 2,000 fish into the Shirakawa River from Tatsumi Bridge. Designated an important preservation district for historic buildings, Gion Shirakawa Tatsumibashi is one of the best places to feel the atmosphere of the ancient capital.
