| TEXT: | TEXT: Ukai is a traditional fishing method by which trained cormorants catch sweetfish and other freshwater fish. Ukai fishing has been practiced in Arashiyama since the Heian era. The Heian-period poet Ariwara no Narihira referred to ukai in a poem, writing: “Oigawa ukaberu fune no kagaribi ni oguranoyama mo nanominarikeri,” (The spectacular view of fishing boats in the Oi river and bright kagaribi (watch fires) lighting up Mt. Ogura carries visitors to a subtle and profound world). Throughout this period, visitors can observe ukai fishing from a boat on the Oi River. In addition to an ordinary boat service, an ukai-watching cruise with a set meal is available for groups of 10 or more at 6,500 yen per person. Reservations must be made at least five days in advance. Boat trips will be cancelled in case of heavy rain, swell, or strong wind. |
