TEXT:   This annual summertime event takes place in July at
Amanohashidate, widely known as one of the three most
scenic views in Japan. Some 200 torches placed along
the 2.6 km-long coast fronting Miyazu Bay and some
100 torches along the Aso Sea coastline light up
Amanohashidate on a summer's night to create a most
enchanting sight.
Based on the legend of Ame no Ukihashi (the floating
bridge of heaven), this event is held so that single men
and women can pray for suitable partners. The legend
goes that Amanohashidate was created when the ladder
that the god Izanagi no Mikoto and the goddess Izanami
no Mikoto used to meet each other in heaven fell to earth.
An engaged couple chosen from the public lights
a heart-shaped firework to launch the event during the
lighting ceremony. Following fireworks, 200 torches are
lit in unison.
