| TEXT: | Enmusubi Kigan-sai Festival is held annually at the beginning of the new year to pray for good luck in love and marriage. The festival takes place at the celebrated Jishu Shrine, which is dedicated to Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, a matchmaking deity. The shrine is at its most crowded during the festival, when over a million people visit. After a purification ceremony against evil and bad luck, a Shinto prayer for good marriage is recited and good luck gavels are presented to the participants of the ceremony. |
