Located in Gion, Yasaka Shrine is affectionately
called “Gion-san. ”
The shrine, widely known for its Gion Festival in July,
as well as its Okera Mairi Festival to ward off illness
and misfortune at New Year, is one of
the most prominent and venerable shrines in Kyoto.
During the shrine's Setsubun Festival, traditional performances,
such as a spectacular dance by four geisha quarters,
including Gionkoubu and Ponto-cho, are given in dedication
to the deity, making Yasaka Shrine’s Setsubun Festival
the most spectacular event in Kyoto.
