TEXT:   Hatsuuma Taisai, lit. the First Horse Day Festival, is a grand festival held on the first day of the horse in February each year to celebrate the day the deity Inari-okami descended to Mt. Inari.  People visit Fushimi-inari-taisha Shrine every year to be blessed and pray for success in business and the safety of family and home.  Shirushi-no-sugi (a sacred cedar twig given to visitors as a token) has been a talisman since old times.  The shrine’s history dates back to 711 when Hata-no-Irogu enshrined the Inari deity at Mt. Inari.  It is the head shrine of 30,000 Inari shrines all over Japan. The time-honored and miracle-working Hatsuuma Taisai attracts many worshippers praying for their businesses and their families and homes for the year.
