TEXT:   Yasaka shrine, which is popular and nicknamed "Gion-san," is often prayed at for a god warding off evils and bringing prosperity to business. On New Year's Eve, the Ooharai ceremony takes place from 15:00, and the Joya festival from 19:00. Next, the fire of "Okerabi" is transferred to light the three "Okera lanterns" in the shrine. Visitors transfer the fire of the lantern to his or her own "Kiccho (auspicious) rope" and carry it home. It is believed that by using the fire to cook New Year’s "Ozoni (rice- cake soup)" or light votive candles, one can stay in sound health throughout the New Year.
