| TEXT: | Kuya's Nenbutsu Dance Ceremony (chanting a prayer as they dance) is designated as a significant intangible folk cultural asset. This ceremony originated in the fact that Kuya Shonin (the founder of Rokuharamitsu-ji) chanted as he was dancing to save souls when the plague prevailed in Kyoto. However, due to suppression of dance and group prayer during the Kamakura period by the administration, the ceremony always has, and still does, take place secretly after dark in this temple. |
