TEXT:

This spring, Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art showcases a number of artworks from one of the three largest museums in the world, Russia’s national State Hermitage Museum.  The Hermitage (meaning “hideaway”) is said to house three million works of art, most collected by Empress Catherine II.  Some 80 oil paintings from the collection were selected on the theme of “City, Nature and People.”  The 75 artists including Monet, Gauguin, Renoir, Matisse and Picasso range from 15th century Venetians to 20th century modern painters. How did such masters see nature, cities, and the people who lived in them?  Come and find out for yourself.
